When Home is No Longer Safe, Faith Leads the Way
Robika Babar, a Christian woman from Karachi, Pakistan, recounts the severe persecution and violence her family faced due to their religious beliefs, which ultimately forced them to flee the country. Robika, a single mother of two, experienced relentless threats and attacks from Haji Rehmat Ullah and his associates, who were supported by members of Jamaat-e-Islami, a radical Islamic organization.
Robika’s family had already faced significant violence, including the closure of their family business after a violent confrontation with Haji in 2003. Her brothers, Robin, Reagon, and Hogan, were repeatedly targeted with false blasphemy accusations, physical assaults, and mob attacks, leading them to flee to Thailand in 2013. Robika and her brother Eujan remained in Pakistan, living in constant fear of being targeted by Haji and his network.
In February 2014, Robika’s husband, Babar, was abducted by Haji’s men and interrogated about her brothers’ whereabouts. A week later, Eujan narrowly escaped a kidnapping attempt by Haji’s associates, who were accompanied by CID police officers. These incidents left the family in a state of panic, forcing them to relocate to Korangi for safety.
Over the next few months, Babar was repeatedly threatened and beaten by Jamaat-e-Islami members, who demanded to know Robika’s location and threatened to convert her to Islam. The family felt helpless, as the police offered no protection to religious minorities like them.
Fearing for their lives, Robika, Babar, and their children decided to leave Pakistan. On January 11, 2015, they fled to Thailand, seeking safety and international protection from the ongoing persecution and threats they faced as Christians in Pakistan.
