When faith is tested, survival becomes the ultimate act of defiance
Robin Khokhar, a Christian from Karachi, Pakistan, recounts the severe persecution and violence his family faced due to their religious beliefs, which ultimately forced them to flee the country. Robin, the eldest of six siblings, worked in his father’s leather manufacturing business until a violent confrontation with a Muslim neighbor, Haji Rehmat Ullah, led to the closure of their business in 2003. Haji and his sons, Shakeel and Akeel, repeatedly targeted Robin’s family, leading to physical assaults, false accusations, and legal troubles.
Key incidents include:
-
- 2003: Haji and his sons attacked Robin’s father, breaking his arm, and forced the family to shut down their business.
- 2011: Robin’s brothers, Reagon and Hogan, were brutally assaulted by Haji’s sons and their friends. Hogan was later arrested on false charges of inciting minorities, and the family had to pay a large bribe to secure his release.
- 2012: Robin was falsely accused of blasphemy by a Muslim employee after a wooden plate engraved with a holy Islamic verse accidentally touched his foot. A mob attacked Robin and his family, nearly raping his sister Robika and severely injuring his brother Hogan. The family was forced to flee their home and go into hiding.
- 2013: Haji filed a false blasphemy case against Robin and his brothers, escalating the danger to their lives. With the help of a pastor, the family arranged for visas to Thailand and fled Pakistan.
Throughout these events, Robin’s family faced constant threats, physical violence, and harassment from Haji and members of Jamaat-e-Islami, a radical Islamic organization. The police offered no protection, and the family lived in fear of being killed or burned alive due to the false blasphemy accusations.
On November 29, 2013, Robin, his wife, children, and brothers fled to Thailand, seeking safety
