My Name is Sam (Rahief Afzal)
I am a refugee, a filmmaker, and the founder of People of Concern. I was born into a Christian family in Karachi, Pakistan, and fled the country in 2013 after a near-death encounter with religious extremists. I sought asylum in Bangkok, hoping to find safety and freedom. But Thailand does not recognize UNHCR refugee status, and I have lived as an undocumented asylum seeker for over a decade.
How POC Began
Over the years, I met many other Pakistani refugees who had endured similar persecution—false blasphemy accusations, mob violence, forced conversions, and the loss of everything they loved. I saw myself in their stories, and I knew I could not stand by and do nothing.
People of Concern was born out of that conviction. What started as a small effort to help a few families has grown into a network of support for 24 families, all of whom have had their visas expire and are living in hiding, waiting for a future that may never come.
Our Vision
We envision a world where no one is persecuted for their faith, and where every family has the right to live in safety and dignity. Until that day comes, we will continue to provide practical help and a voice for those who have been silenced.
What We Provide
- Food Packages:Monthly provisions to ensure families do not go hungry.
- Rent Support:Assistance with housing for families living in overcrowded, unsafe conditions.
- Medical Care:Emergency and ongoing medical support for those who cannot afford it.
- Transportation:Help with essential travel to hospitals, schools, and appointments.
