How do we define ethics and its practical social value?

Ethics is the philosophical discipline concerned with what is morally good and bad, and morally right and wrong. It explores fundamental issues of practical decision making, including the nature of ultimate value and the standards by which human actions can be morally evaluated1.

Morality, on the other hand, focuses on what people ought to do rather than what they actually do, and it is a rational and systematic field of inquiry that studies practical reasons for acting one way or another3.

Good practical ethics relies on an in-depth understanding of real-world facts and issues and is often interdisciplinary4.

Ethical values are broader and universal principles that guide human behavior, while moral values are more specific norms and beliefs of a particular culture, religion, or social group5.
